Authorities in the eastern Caribbean are conducting a search for a missing U.S. couple, Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel, who were aboard their catamaran Simplicity when it was hijacked by three escaped prisoners from Grenada. The search began on Feb. 21 after their catamaran was found abandoned on the shores of St. Vincent.

Why Were the Couple Targeted?

The motive behind the hijacking remains unclear, but the catamaran was moored near the police station from which the prisoners escaped. Police suspect that the couple was aboard the catamaran when it was hijacked and may have been thrown into the water during the journey to St. Vincent.

Who Has Jurisdiction of the Case?

Prosecutors in St. Vincent and Grenada are in discussions regarding jurisdiction over the case. Grenada has sent officials to assist with the investigation in St. Vincent, where the catamaran was found.

What's Next?

Grenada police are investigating the circumstances of the prisoners' escape and whether there were any lapses in security at the police station. No officers have been disciplined so far, but an internal investigation is ongoing.
