A recent national poll has revealed that former President Trump holds a four-percentage-point lead over President Biden in the upcoming 2024 presidential election. The poll, released just before their first televised debate hosted by CNN, shows Trump with 48% of the electorate's support compared to Biden's 44%.

Interestingly, the poll also indicates that a majority of respondents believe there should be a different nominee for both the Democratic and Republican parties. Specifically, 61% think there should be a different Democratic nominee, while 33% support Biden. On the Republican side, 54% prefer a different nominee, with 41% in favor of Trump.

Notably, the poll highlights a significant increase in support for Trump among Black likely voters since the 2020 election. While only 5% of Black registered voters supported Trump in 2020, the recent poll shows that number has risen to 26%. However, the majority of Black likely voters, 65%, still back Biden.

Regarding public opinion on the candidates' age and recent events, the poll indicates that 68% believe Biden is too old to be an effective president, while 39% hold the same view for Trump. Additionally, following Trump's criminal conviction in a hush-money case, most voters (68%) stated that the conviction did not impact their likelihood of supporting him.

As the election approaches, Thursday's debate between Trump and Biden is seen as a crucial moment that could potentially shift the course of the race. This debate, hosted by CNN, marks the earliest general election debate in history and is a departure from the traditional format, with no live audience and muted microphones for the candidates when not speaking.

Both candidates have agreed to the new rules for the debate, including no consultation with staff during breaks. With just over four months until Election Day, the debate presents a unique opportunity for Trump and Biden to engage directly and address key issues facing the nation.
